On July 9, 2004, twenty-one-year-old Leigh Matthews, a student at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, was kidnapped from the university's parking lot. Her abductor demanded a ransom from her father, businessman Rob Matthews.

Despite the family's efforts to pay the ransom and negotiate for Leigh's release, she was murdered shortly after her abduction. Her body was found on July 21 near Walkerville, south of Johannesburg.

Phone records and forensic evidence led police to Donovan Moodley, a former university acquaintance. Moodley was arrested and charged with kidnapping and murder. He was convicted in December 2005 and sentenced to life imprisonment.

The case had a profound impact on South African society, highlighting issues of campus safety and the prevalence of violent crime. It led to increased security measures at universities across the country.
