The 'Frankford Slasher' is the name given to an unidentified serial killer who stabbed to death at least eight or nine women in and around the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia between 1985 and 1990. One man, Leonard Christopher, was convicted of a single killing, but the wider series remains unsolved.

Between 1985 and 1990, a string of brutal killings in the Frankford section of Northeast Philadelphia gave rise to the media nickname 'Frankford Slasher.' At least eight women, and by some counts nine, were sexually assaulted and stabbed to death, many of their bodies left in and around the blocks of Frankford Avenue between Wakeling and Bridge streets, near the elevated train line.

The victims shared a set of vulnerabilities that made them easy targets. They were described as women living on the margins of society: several were White, local to the area, and struggled with mental illness or drug and alcohol dependency. Many were last seen at bars along Frankford Avenue before being found stabbed, and the repeated pattern of the attacks convinced police and the public that a single killer was at work.

In 1990, following the murder of victim Carol Dowd, police arrested Leonard Christopher, a Black man who worked in the neighborhood. Christopher was convicted of first-degree murder in Dowd's death and sentenced to life in prison. The conviction, however, has long been regarded as controversial: no murder weapon, motive, or physical evidence such as blood was tied to him, and he did not fit witness descriptions of the suspect, whom several people described as a middle-aged white man.

Crucially, some killings attributed to the Slasher fit the same pattern even while Christopher was already in custody, undermining the theory that he alone was responsible. Witnesses had described a middle-aged white man, said to frequent the neighborhood's bars, who vanished after being questioned. Christopher maintained his innocence and later died of cancer while still imprisoned.

The broader series of Frankford killings has never been solved. Philadelphia investigators have periodically revisited the case, including re-examining surviving physical evidence with DNA techniques that were unavailable at the time of the original investigations. To date, no one has been identified as the Frankford Slasher, and most of the murders remain officially open.
