Dagmar Hagelin
Swedish-Argentine teenager Dagmar Hagelin was shot and kidnapped by Argentine Navy officer Alfredo Astiz during the Dirty War. She was never seen again and is believed to have been murdered.
On January 27, 1977, seventeen-year-old Dagmar Ingrid Hagelin, a Swedish-Argentine citizen, was visiting a friend's house in Martínez, a suburb of Buenos Aires. A group of Argentine Navy personnel arrived to abduct the friend, who was suspected of having links to leftist groups. Dagmar was mistaken for the target.
As Dagmar tried to flee, she was shot in the back by Lieutenant Alfredo Astiz, a naval intelligence officer who became known as the 'Angel of Death' for his role in the regime's atrocities. Wounded, she was loaded into a Ford Falcon and taken away. She was never seen again.
The Swedish government demanded information about Dagmar's fate, but the Argentine military regime denied knowledge. It is believed she was taken to the ESMA (Navy Mechanics School), a notorious detention and torture center, where she was likely killed.
In 2011, Astiz was convicted of crimes against humanity including Dagmar's kidnapping and presumed murder, receiving a life sentence. Despite this conviction, Dagmar's remains have never been found and the full circumstances of her death remain unknown.
